A tidewater glacier and snow peaks in Alaska

ITINERARY

Seattle

Board in Seattle and sail in the late afternoon. Worth arriving a day or two early — Pike Place Market and the waterfront are a short walk from the terminal.

At sea

A day at sea heading north through Canadian coastal waters.

Ketchikan

Alaska's first port of call and the totem pole capital — Creek Street on stilts above the water, and floatplanes taking off from the harbour all day.

Juneau

The state capital, reachable only by air or sea. The Mendenhall Glacier is twenty minutes from the pier; whale watching in Auke Bay is the other reason people come.

Skagway

A gold rush town that has kept its wooden storefronts. The White Pass and Yukon Route railway climbs out of town on a narrow gauge line built in 1898 — the single best excursion in Alaska.

Inside Passage cruising

A full day of scenic cruising rather than a port. The ship works its way among the fjords and tidewater glaciers; the open decks are where you want to be, with a coat.

Victoria, British Columbia

An evening call in Victoria — the Empress Hotel, the inner harbour and the Butchart Gardens if you take the excursion.

Seattle

Alongside in Seattle in the morning.
